Tooth Extractions

The goal of the dentist is to prevent you from losing your teeth.  Dr. Goodrick wants to make sure that you have the best oral health possible.

Whether it is to prevent future dental problems, or if it is necessary to aid in the treatment of other dental problems, Dr. Goodrick will only perform tooth extractions when they are absolutely necessary to aid your overall dental health.

Dr. Goodrick will perform tooth extractions for people whose teeth have been extensively damaged from decay or trauma.  However, if you do have a tooth that needs to be extracted, it is a good idea to have the tooth replaced because of the problems a missing tooth causes.

A missing tooth can cause the rest of your teeth to drift out of place, as well as make you self-conscious or embarrassed about the way your smile looks.  Prior to having a tooth extraction, Dr. Goodrick will review your dental history and suggest any other alternative treatments that may be performed.

X-rays will also be taken of your mouth to determine what additional dental problems may exist or may be caused from the tooth extraction.  Dr. Goodrick informs all his patients about the procedure they are having.

If you have questions or concerns about your tooth extraction, be sure to ask Dr. Goodrick about them.  You should be comfortable about your tooth extraction and well informed about alternatives.  Dr. Goodrick will help you with all your dental concerns.

Your tooth extraction could be performed while you are sedated so that you will not recall any discomfort during the procedure.  If you have any discomfort at any point during the procedure, inform Dr. Goodrick so that he can relieve it for you.

If your tooth extraction will be performed with the use of sedatives, you will need assistance from someone who will drive you to Dr. Goodrick’s office as well as drive you home after the tooth extraction.

Once the tooth extraction is complete, Dr. Goodrick will have you bite down on a piece of clean gauze to help stop bleeding and so that blood clots can form in the socket and aid in the healing process.

After your tooth extraction, you should rest for 24 hours so that your mouth can heal.  Also, you should limit the food you eat to liquids so that excess stress is not put on the socket area.  Hot liquids may dissolve the helpful blood clot, so they should be avoided for a few days.

Brushing and flossing the tooth extractions site and the neighboring teeth should be limited for a few days.  On the days following the procedure, warm salt water should be gently rinsed through the mouth to help remove food particles as well as to promote healing.

If there is any serious discomfort after a few days of healing from the tooth extraction, be sure to contact Dr. Goodrick because you may be developing “dry socket.”  If this is the case, further dental procedures may be needed.
